TEXAS HOLD'EM POKER (OR "HOLD'EM")

Hold'em poker is also known as Texas Hold'em and is the most popular poker game played today. There are three types of Hold'em games:

1. Limit Hold'em has a specific betting limit applied to each game and each round of poker.
2. Pot Limit Hold'em is when a player’s maximum bet is the amount in the current pot.
3. No Limit Hold'em is when a player can bet all of his/her chips at any time.

The Game

Hold’em Poker uses a dealer-button to indicate the theoretical dealer of each hand.
After a hand is completed, according to standard poker rules, the button moves clockwise around the table to the next active player, who becomes the new dealer.

The First round:

As a fresh table starts with the first person to be dealt an ace face-up determines the dealer’s position and where the button starts. The player to the left of the button is the “small blind”, and the player to the left of the small blind is the “big blind”. Both of these players must bet. This insures that there is money in every pot. All blinds in Hold’em poker are considered live bets and the players who posted them have the options of checking, calling, raising or folding when the betting returns to their position. After the blinds are placed, two down cards or (hole cards) are dealt. After, all hole cards are dealt the first round of betting starts. The player to the left of the big blind is first to bet for this round. Bets can be placed, by playing any of the following options : Fold, Check, Bet, Call or Raise. Each player has the option to place his or her bet for this round or to fold his or her cards also known as “Mucking your Cards”. After the first round of betting is over, the Flop takes place which consists of three community cards being dealt. The community cards are available to all the players still participating in this hand.

The Second Round

After the flop and for each subsequent round of betting, the first player to act is the player left of the button. Bets can be placed, by playing any of the following options -Fold, Check, Bet, Call or Raise. The first player placing the bet will act on one of these Betting options. The other players then get to Fold, Check, Call or Raise the Bet. Once betting is done for this round, the next card to be dealt is called "Fourth Street" or "The Turn".

The Third Round

The third round starts with the player left of the button, being the first to act either by betting, checking, or folding his hand. Again bets can be placed by any of the betting options previously mentioned. Combinations of these options are available to all players who are still in the game based on the previous player’s actions. The last player placing a bet will determine whether or not the next round is needed. After this the fifth community card is dealt out this is also known as "Fifth Street" or "The River".

The Fourth Round

The fourth (and final) round starts with the first player to the left of the button to act first. Here again one of the betting options mentioned previously are available to all players still in the game and betting will depend on the actions taken by previous player’s. Once betting is done then the winning hand is determined by the best five cards available.

Some standard rules for Hold’em

You are allowed a maximum of four bets per player for each round, which includes one bet, and three raises for each round of betting. The term cap is used to describe the final bet in a round. Betting is then capped and no one can make another raise or bet for that round. Once the betting is capped, players have the option to call or fold. Folding can be done at any time in the game and is determined by giving your cards to the dealer. Any player who folds is out of this hand.

Another option a player has is to use the “Check” option, which allows a player to pass his/her turn without placing a bet. This option is not always available to a player; but depends on the actions taken by a previous player. If a bet is placed in this round with the Check option to stay in this hand the player MUST call or equal the amount bet by the previous player Poker is typically played as a "table stakes" game, meaning that only the chips in play at the beginning of each hand can be used throughout the hand. This means that the player cannot get additional funds from the cashier while he or she is in the middle of a hand. An application of the table stakes rule is the "All-In" rule, which states a player cannot be forced to forfeit a hand because he does not have enough chips to call a bet. Exceptions to the value of betting in each round: A player who does not have enough chips to call a bet is declared All-In. This player is then eligible for the portion of the pot up to the point of his final wager. All further action involving other players takes place in a "side pot", which is unavailable to the player who went All-In. The side pot is then given to the next winning combination. When a player goes All-in, the pot at the center of the table, which has bets from other players, is treated as the main pot, over which the All-in player has rights too. Poker is a multi player game, and players are expected to play within a set time-frame which varies with each game and each casino. Poker is a combination of Luck, Skill and Guts and can be played in many formats.
